Running an application server as a multi story
structure |
|
| |
Installing NT Server and a database system on a single server usually means that you have to invest
into a good padding of extra RAM (compared to a UNIX based system).
Go a few steps further and risk setting up an application server running a
Java program connected to an oracle 8.05 enterprise database on the same
server. You think that's plenty to start with?
Hmmm! Don't be a coward
and go even further by installing IIS 4.0 with its services "Web, FTP,
SMTP, NNTP" (sorry we don't want to forget that MS Transaction Server gets also
installed onto this box).
But you'll be asking why we want to install
a database, Java softy and IIS on one box.
Let me explain at
first about the whole idea behind the more than exciting mixture.
Setting up modern support services needs to accommodate a powerful system that will track all incoming calls and keep all applied servicing
steps recorded. From all this data we compile a nice and handy knowledge
base.
So lets start cooking:
We need following
tasks:
- a database (keep call data stored)
- An application capable of call management
- on-line port for mobile service engineers
- on-line information and contact facilities for
customers
- E-Mail and form processing facilities
- Up to date knowledge base on solutions
- workflow processing and tasks engines
- on-line training for engineers
- Newsgroups for all service units
- reporting and alarm functionality
You must add to these tasks all security and
recovery tasks as a 24h system must be protected and if necessary brought back
to life in case of any technical failure.
