How to pack your suit case

Since You are only allowed to have one suitcase and one hand luggage (a.k.a. carry-on-bag) for transfer purposes, packing can be a very daunting task.

depending on the duration of your stay you must adjust your choice of things to take with you.

There are many steps that must be taken to insure that you have what you need for clothing in the first several months.

You need to start thinking about what to bring to the country you are visiting at least 2 months in advance.

Even if you don't know where you will be placed, you can still start preparing gifts, money, and resources.

Packing always begins with thinking about where you will be going.

If you are in northern countries or regions, you might want more warm clothing with you.

Southern countries or regions, more short sleeve shirts or more skirts.

Central countries or regions, well you might need a combination.

Next, think about those things you can send (pamflets, hand outs, etc.) and those things you need to have with you (overhead projection sheets).

If you arrive at the beginning of one of the hottest points of the year you should be prepared for hot days and warm nights.

If you will be traveling to colder outskirts, pack clothes that could be layered just in case.

If you have been posted overseas for over 8 months you will want to have some things of home with you:

Once you have prepared what you really need to bring with you, start preparing boxes.

Send winter clothes, videos , maps, books and other items you may need later.

Put them in a series of small boxes and as you put the items in, write down what the item is and how much it is worth.

Using small boxes will make the customs forms at the post office easier this will also make make it a little less expensive. Now it is time for you to pack your bag.

  softsided suitcase

Some people recommend a softsided suitcase as they can expand much easier and as a result hold more.

They recommend packing 3/4 of the work clothes that you want and sending the rest.

Others prefer hard case suit cases.

  2 methods to pack cloths

a. Roll your clothes.

This saves space and prevents wrinking. Start by folding your clothes on a bed or open space. Shirts should be rolled from the bottom up so that the collar can be folded in nad the sleeves can stay flat against other cloth.

If you have a suitcoat or nice dress/suit, put it into a plastic cover and lay it on the bottom of the bag.

Keeping it in the bottom will keep it in good condition and help you make a good impression on people you meet.

b. Put your clothes into bags.

If you use a suit case you should fold your shirts nicely and stack 4 to 6 ontop of each other.

Push them neatly into a plastic bag (A4 format). You should lay your trowsers into the bottom double folded.

Place two shoes (in separate bags) with the soles touching the bottom of the case.

Take your socks, roll them and place them in your shoes.

The disadvantage of a soft case

An alternate option is to place your coat or suit on top but be careful that you do not get it caught and that it is very well covered in plastic.

Water can sometimes leek of the fusalae of a plane and if the zipper on a soft sided suitcase is not completely sealed, water could damage the articles inside.

Work your way up layering shoes, and gifts on top of the coat or nice dress. Then do shirts and pants.

When you get to the top you should have your toiletries and clothing that you might want to get changed into right away.

Stuff loose spaces with underwear and socks.

Do not pack liquids (shampoo, gel, after shave) and preasurized bottle (shaving gel, hair spray) into your sout case. They must go into the hand luggage!

Wrap your shampoos and any other bottled item in ziplock bags. The change in pressure of the plane can sometime cause the bottles to expand and contract.

The plastic will catch it and protect it from leaking onto your clothes and your other toiletries. You should have some extra space, you never know what you might find that you might want to buy.

  Packing your hand bag

The last thing to pack is your hand bag or hand luggage:

this couls be a duffle bag or a backpack.

Regardless it must be easy to carry along with your suitcase and be an extra bag for carrying things to work.

In this bag you should pack:

  • a guide book
  • your contract
  • books
and anything that you think you might need when you are on the plane or in the Hotel.
