SSH (Secure Shell) is a popular, robust, TCP/IP-based product for network security and privacy, supporting strong encryption and authentication. This book covers Unix, Windows, and Macintosh implementations of SSH.

It shows both system administrators and end users how to install, maintain, and troubleshoot SSH; configure servers and clients in simple and complex ways; apply SSH to practical problems; and protect other TCP applications through forwarding (tunneling).

Book Description

Secure your computer network with SSH! With transparent, strong encryption, reliable public-key authentication, and a highly configurable client/server architecture, SSH (Secure Shell) is a popular, robust, TCP/IP-based solution to many network security and privacy concerns.

It supports secure remote logins, secure file transfer between computers, and a unique "tunneling" capability that adds encryption to otherwise insecure network applications. Best of all, SSH is free, with feature-filled commercial versions available as well. SSH: The Secure Shell:

The Definitive Guide covers the Secure Shell in detail for both system administrators and end users. It demystifies the SSH man pages and includes thorough coverage of:

  • SSH1, SSH2, and OpenSSH, and F-Secure
  • SSH for Unix, plus Windows and Macintosh products: the basics, the internals, and complex applications.
  • Configuring SSH servers and clients, both system-wide and per user, with recommended settings to maximize security.
  • Advanced key management using agents, agent forwarding, and forced commands.
  • Forwarding (tunneling) of TCP and X11 applications in depth, even in the presence of firewalls and network address translation (NAT).
  • Undocumented behaviors of popular SSH implementations.
  • Installing and maintaining SSH systems.
  • Troubleshooting a wide variety of common and not-so-common problems.

Whether you're communicating on a small LAN or across the Internet, SSH can ship your data from "here" to "there" efficiently and securely. So throw away those insecure .rhosts and hosts.equiv files, move up to SSH, and make your network a safe place to live and work.

  Final Review

Yes, this is true SSH. You can really get to grip with the difficulty of jumping into this so different environment.

A text covering the Secure Shell in detail, for system administrators and end users communicating on a small local area network or on the Internet. Dan Barrett and Richard E. Silverman created an excellent book which includes the coverage of
i
  • nstalling and maintaining SSH systems,
  • advanced key management using agents,
  • agent forwarding,
  • and forced commands,
  • integrating SSH with Kerberos,
  • PGP, PAM, and
  • other software, and more.

So what can we say about this Softcover edition of a book referencing and introducing us into the SSH technology? You are a UNIX or Linux admin and want the best documentation on SSH. You will of course say: Well, there are many books on ssh. Just go to the next major bookstore. This is true in some areas of SSH. Like any system everything can go into detail or stay at a general perspective.

The main problem why online documentation is good and not is that we tend to look for the fastest explainantion but require the comfort of reading a book. This is a case of check mate. Why?

Because it can be quite a stupid thing scanning around pages and not knowing where one is.

This is why you should try to get abook that tends to your needs. No book can be the 100% solution but if you know what you need you can get quite a close cut. Best - when you get the book - thebook that answers all your questions.

Anyway, this book gives a well ordered insight into ssh - giving you the ability to read topic by topic.

About the Author

Dan Barrett, has been immersed in Internet technology since 1985. Currently a software engineer and vice president at a well-known financial services company, Dan has also been a heavy metal singer, Unix system administrator, university lecturer, web designer, and humorist.

Dan has written several other O'Reilly books, including NetResearch: Finding Information Online and Bandits on the Information Superhighway, as well as monthly columns for Compute! and Keyboard Magazine. He and his family reside in Boston.

Richard E. Silverman first touched a computer as a college junior in 1986, when he logged into a DEC-20, typed "MM" to send some mail, and was promptly lost to the world. He eventually resurfaced and discovered he had a career, which was convenient but somewhat disorienting, since he hadn't really been looking for one.

Since earning his B.A. in computer science and M.A. in pure mathematics, Richard has worked in the fields of networking, formal methods in software development, public-key infrastructure, routing security, and Unix systems administration. Outside of work, he loves to read, study languages and mathematics, sing, dance, and exercise.
