Final Review
Isn't it ice to make data live? Those of us who rely on databases
to foster our valuable business information knows how
unpleasant it can be if your database doesn't behave as it should.
This is not just a problem of MS SQL Administrators! If you
have to keep an Oracle Enterprise Database in an Active Directory
- many people are able to make your life quite miserable.
But lets take a step forward and tackle those critical events
in the daily lives of SQL2000 Admins.
We became quite interested in Osborne's promising book
"Admin911 SQL Server 2000" by Brian Knight. This survival
kit or better "guide" - gives system admins a chance to be more advanced
than other admins.
What can be more unpleasant than an impatient customer trying
to deny any involvement. A boss calling you a incompetent fool who's
fault it must be that the system breaks down.
Stay cool and follow Brian's tips to solve some of the trickiest
problems. You haven't got a problem? Fine for you! But are you sure
you are getting the most out of your system?
In the service industry where you may be mass-producing application,
the common debate is whether to go with one database per client
or shared database.
This is really a political decision more than anything technical.
However, once you make the decision - stick to it.
Brian, explains this rule with examples. Many topics are accompanied
by code examples, scenarios and valuable tips.

On 350 pages Knight has truly made this book a must for SQL2000
Admins. As many Microsoft and 3rd Party products use SQL2000
as plattform it is necessary to have a survival guide if you are the
only SQL admin in your location.
An Oracle Admin might be able to help you by giving hints but he can't
get you out of the horrible mess.
It is your job and with this guide you will be well prepared for the
unwanted.
